Eight Things You Didn’t Know About Me

I was inspired by this blog post from one of my favorite bloggers who writes about social media. He gave an open invitation to readers of his blog to follow suit and reveal eight interesting things about themselves to the world through their blog.

Here is my eight:

1. I am chubby at around 200 lbs. and wear my hair closely cropped at the cusp of hitting 37 years old. Most people who know me today probably don’t know that from my teens to my late 20′s I was a bit skinny and wore my hair to about shoulder length. I was at 155 lbs. for a long time and was fashionably long-haired.

2. I am a serious guitar hobbyist. I have been playing guitar on and off since I was in high school with a long break of about seven years where I did not play at all. I rediscovered my love for the guitar in 2005 and just a few months ago started learning proper technique and music theory with the help of an excellent guitar teacher.

3. My guitar dream is to be able to play blues slide guitar like Duane Allman and Derek Trucks. I have a serious jones for blues-based Southern Rock and consider myself an aspiring bluesman!

4. My other guitar dream is to form a band with middle-aged dudes like myself who came of age in the 80s and to play the Independence Day Philippine Festival in Washington DC. I’d like us to play a few 80s hair band covers but also develop a repertoire of Pinoy Rock classics from Wolfgang, Razorback, Lokomotiv, Juan de la Cruz, Maria Cafra, The Dawn, Judas, etc.

5. I am an avid collector of Pinoy Rock music although I live in Washington DC in the US. I especially like the music from the alternative rock band explosion in the early to mid-90s like the Eraserheads, Sandwich, Wolfgang, Razorback, The Dawn, Color it Red, the Jerks, Agaw Agimat, Yano, Rivermaya, Buklod, etc. I even have a few collectors’ items like cassette tapes of the Jerks Live! and three LA 105.9 FM compilations.

6. I am a Red Diaper baby who was raised by parents in the 1970s under Martial Law in the Philippines under Ferdinand Marcos. Consequently, for a long time, I considered myself a Marxist. Or at least, class conscious along Marxist terms of class struggle, who controls ownership of production, and an aversion to capitalism.

7. Through time I became disillusioned with Marxism although I still consider myself to be a very liberal-progressive type of person in my political views.

8. I love eating pork rinds.

Guidelines for Schmoozing

Guidelines for Schmoozing

OK I’m going out to try to meet and mingle with political types. Here are some guidelines I set up for myself to make sure that my encounters with people in person and online are productive. I recently realized the value of having such guidelines in my comments policy for my blog posts so I thought I’d set some guidelines up for personal contacts as well.

If you are a political type meeting me for the first time here is what to expect:

  • I’m inexperienced and somewhat politically unsophisticated in organized political activism
  • My inexperience may be an asset that I don’t have the baggage of jaded cynicism that can come with experience
  • I bring an “outsider” perspective of being a political Independent who is not aligned with either major party and feels no personal compulsion to toe a party line
  • Although an Independent, I veer left in many issues. I self-label as a “Populist Progressive”
  • I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm that I’m raring to channel in productive ways
  • I have skills in writing, editing, desktop publishing, graphics, web development, and a newly-minted master’s degree in communications I am wanting to apply and put to practice
  • I’m a veteran of many volunteer efforts and can do grunt work with the best of them
  • I am nice and play well with others
  • And here is what I am looking for in terms of what will make me want to get involved:

  • I’m looking to see examples of Progressive idealism put into action
  • I am impressed by concrete, measurable results
  • I respect political argument and perspectives. I respect words backed up with action consistent with those words more.
  • I respect a solid track record and a widespread reputation for good works
  • Anyone can take a position and spout off on any issue. I am looking for people who can and have made things happen in the real world
  • I am looking for good teachers and mentors

  • Welcome to My New Blog!

I perceive and position myself as an ordinary person in American society–meaning I don’t hold an elected position in government, I am not in a high powered leadership position in business or the organization I work for.

I work for a living. I live on my wages and manage a household budget judiciously. I rent the apartment I live in. In terms of education I recently graduated with a masters degree. I have student loans. Both my spouse and I work. We are in our 30s. We have no children yet. These are my credentials for writing this blog.

America and Americans always pride themselves on the tradition of political democracy. The idea that ordinary people can participate and have a voice in the political process. Through the eyes of one ordinary person–me–I will write about the challenges and realities of democratic participation for an ordinary person in the United States.

This blog, itself, is an effort in democratic participation in the public sphere or free space in society where citizens can present arguments for or against political and economic issues and their solutions through reasoned debate.

Rules of thumb for selecting issues to discuss
    • Ranting and venting is not what I want to do. We have enough of that negative energy in cyberspace.
    • I want to engage the critical potential of the public sphere as a vehicle for citizens to communicate their ideas on politics, economics and society as ordinary people.
    • I want to communicate with people on issues that are relevant to them and which resonate with their status as ordinary folks living in the United States .
    • I do not consider myself a member of either major political parties, the Democrats or Republicans. I am a registered and proud Independent.
